Rapid strengthening is forecast during the next 24 to 36 hours, and Eta is expected to become a hurricane tonight, with additional strengthening likely until the hurricane makes landfall Monday night or early Tuesday.
Tropical Storm Eta has increased into a 50 mph tropical storm early this afternoon.
Temperatures this afternoon will remain in the 60s across much of the area, except for over the Northwest, where the mercury will fall back into the 50s and near US-80, where readings will fall back from the lower 80s by late afternoon.
A strong, but dry cold front will bring colder temperatures to Alabama, including the potential for a freeze tonight and again Monday night for parts of the area.
The freeze watch for Sunday night has been upgraded to a freeze warning and expanded southward to include several more counties in North Central Alabama.
