THIS AFTERNOON: Clouds cover much of Alabama this afternoon, although there are thin spots in the overcast over the southern half of the state. Temperatures are mostly in the 50s, and there are patches of light rain and drizzle on radar. Precipitation ends this evening, and the sky will clear late tonight as drier air works into the state behind a cold front.
The Southeastern Conference said Tuesday that SEC Football Media Days in 2021 is being moved from Nashville to Hoover at the Hyatt Regency Birmingham Wynfrey Hotel July 19-22.
Radar just after 11:00 am shows that nearly all of North/Central Alabama had dried out with the only exception being the extreme northwest corner of the area where a few very light showers are showing up.
The state’s first tornado of the year touched down in Fultondale late Monday night, causing a fatality, injuries, and damage to homes and businesses in the community just north of Birmingham.
Central Alabama was involved within a warm sector area during the night of January 25th, 2021, featuring dew points in the low to mid-60s and surface-based instability reaching as high as 1,200 J/kg.
WET AT TIMES TODAY: Clouds will cover Alabama today, and periods of rain will continue with the approach a cold front. There could be a rumble of thunder somewhere, but no severe storms are expected, and additional rain amounts today will be generally 1/2 inch or less. Temperatures will begin to fall this afternoon over the northern third of the state as colder air pushes in behind the front.
This is one of the things that people look at and say, ‘Somebody needs to cut all off that stuff back.’ What they really mean is somebody else.

The pandemic threw a monkey wrench in Alabama’s economy last year, interrupting a golden period of substantial growth and casting doubt on whether the momentum could be regained.
The cold front is stalled across South Alabama as we head into the afternoon hours. Along and south of the front, rain and a few strong storms will remain a threat today across South Alabama. North of the front, we are dry and seeing more sun than clouds with temperatures in the 60s.

ON THE MAPS: A cold front is nearing U.S. 80 this morning; a band of showers persists ahead of the front. Those showers will continue to drift slowly southward today, and a few stronger storms are possible later across the southeast part of the state, where SPC has defined a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) of severe thunderstorms.
