A two-pronged winter storm is going to affect Alabama over the next 48 hours. Here is the latest as of 8 p.m. Sunday evening.
NWS Birmingham issues a Winter Storm Watch starting at 6:00 am Monday morning and is set to expire at 12:00 am Tuesday for the following counties in Central Alabama: Fayette, Greene, Lamar, Marion, Pickens, Sumter, Tuscaloosa, Walker, and Winston. Also, Lamar, Marion, and Winston counties have been placed under a Winter Weather Advisory from 6:00 pm Sunday night through 6:00 am Monday morning.
NWS Huntsville has placed much of North Alabama under a Winter Storm Watch that starts at 6:00 pm Sunday night and is expected to expire at 6:00 am Tuesday. Counties included in the watch are Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, and Limestone.
As of 11:00 am, much of the shower activity has pushed out of Central Alabama except for a few showers remaining over parts of Cleburne, Clay, Randolph, Tallapoosa, and Chambers counties in the eastern parts of the area.
NWS Huntsville extends the Winter Weather Advisory to 12:00 pm for Colbert, Cullman, Franklin, Jackson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marshall, and Morgan counties in North Alabama.
NWS Birmingham has allowed the Winter Weather Advisory for Blount, Fayette, and Walker counties to expire, but it has been extended for Lamar, Marion, and Winston counties until 12:00 pm.
Freezing rain in the north will quickly end this morning and all precipitation should be out of here later this afternoon. Most of Sunday remains dry before the next system moves in with the potential of freezing rain for parts of the area.
As of 5:45 am this morning, we still have some potential for freezing rain in the northern parts of North/Central Alabama mainly from around Cullman and Double Springs up to Athens, Huntsville, and Ardmore.
