Lingering moisture from recent rainfall, in combination with cold air moving into the region, has created widespread black ice on a number of area roadways, including some major highways.
Black ice is now forming on major roadways and highways across North/Central Alabama, to go along with the roadways already covered with ice and sleet from the wintry precipitation that fell earlier today.

RADAR CHECK: Rain and freezing rain along with some sleet continues over much of North/Central Alabama this afternoon, with strong to severe storms over the southern tip of the state, where severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for parts of Coffee, Dale, Geneva, Henry and Houston counties at mid-afternoon.
Please, if at all possible, leave a little early, so you can safely make it home from work. Once the temperatures hit the freezing mark, it will not take long at all for those icing issues to start.
At 118 PM CST, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm over Logan, or near Fort Deposit, moving northeast at 65 mph. Pea size hail and winds in excess of 40 mph will be possible with this storm.
