Weather Improving Nicely

The Sunday edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme Video is available in the player below, and on iTunes…

Thankfully we made it through last night without any terribly bad damage across Central Alabama. Unfortunately, that can’t be said for areas west of here – primarily those areas that were in the moderate risk posted by the Storm Prediction Center. And today weather conditions are already improving across Central Alabama with blue sky and a mild start to the day.

Like yesterday, the wind will be of some concern as we see westerly wind at 10 to 20 mph but not quite as strong as yesterday. Temperatures will not change dramatically since the latest system has a Pacific origin, so temperatures over the next few days will actually be fairly typical of late February with highs in the 60s and lows in the 30s.

The work week starts out dry with mild temperatures. But we remain in a vigorous weather pattern with a steady stream of weather systems about every four days. By Wednesday, another strong trough digs into the western US and with it another potential for severe weather across the Nation’s mid-section. This has some potential to be a significant weather producer with a little more opportunity for warmth and moisture. The next system starts with a little more warmth plus the Gulf seems to open more quickly. The longer range GFS MOS numbers don’t show that yet, but the Storm Prediction Center folks have already been outlooking the March 1 time period for Alabama. No borrowing weather concerns here – always something to watch next.

The next system may well usher in another round – but short round – of cold weather with highs by next weekend staying in the 50s. I’m sure this will be the focus for discussions over the next several days.

Don’t forget our last Storm Alert 2007 show will be this Tuesday at 7 pm at the Bessemer Civic Center. We have a great program, so I hope you can get out for it. Plus if you still need a NOAA weather radio, you can pick up a very nice model from Midland Radio that features the digital technology of SAME, Specific Area Messsage Encoding, which allows you to select which counties and how many you get alarmed for. Those area available from Publix and Handy TV across Central Alabama.

Counting down to an afternoon nap, but as JB says so wel and so often, “Life goes on.” And my dog is echoing his words since she has not yet been fed – okay, okay, feed the dog FIRST then nap!!! Have a great Sunday and God bless.
