These Pesky Clouds Won’t Go Away At Midday

| December 19, 2016 @ 12:51 pm

A Cloudy And Cold Midday For Your Monday
Some lucky spots have a decent amount of sunshine at this hour, but most of us in Central Alabama are dealing with some pesky clouds that won’t go away, and might actually start to build more as the afternoon goes on. We have a large inversion in place over the area, and with cold air draining in from the northeast and a southwesterly flow aloft, clouds will slowly increase in areas where there are none at this point. Skies will be mostly cloudy across the area by late in the afternoon. This cloud cover will keep afternoon highs lower than expected, with upper 30s to mid 40s expected throughout the area from north to south. High in Birmingham is only expected to top out at 40 degrees. Mostly cloudy skies and cold will be the story for tonight and through the overnight hours, with lows in the 20s and 30s for most, with a few low 40s to the south.

Current Temperatures Across Central Alabama
At 12:30 PM, temperatures are currently ranging from the low to mid 30s in the northern parts of the area, with mid 30s to mid 40s in the south. Warm spot is currently Montgomery at 46 degrees, while Cullman is currently the cool spot at 32 degrees.

Birmingham’s Climatology And Records
The normal high for December 19th is 55, while the normal low is 35. The record high for today was set back in 1984 at 75 degrees. The record low was set back in 1963 at 11 degrees.

A Much Warmer Day For Tuesday
Skies will start of the day mostly cloudy, but will begin to clear out during the late morning and afternoon hours. We’ll actually get to thaw out from the cold of the past two days, as daytime highs will reach the low to mid 50s across the area from north to south. For the evening and into the overnight hours, skies will be mostly clear with slightly warmer lows than the night before. Lows will be in the low 30s to near 40 across the area from north to south.

National Extremes
Sanford, Florida recorded the warmest high temperature for Sunday at 89 degrees. Lone Rock and just to the northwest of Austin, Wisconsin recorded the coldest low temperature for last night into the early morning hours today at -24 degrees.
