At Midday, It’s Time To Kick The Ice Outta Here

Time For You To Go Ice
Its a mostly sunny day across much of Central Alabama at the midday hour, with only a few clouds located over the southwestern counties of the area. This sunshine, along with a change in the flow across the area, has allowed temperatures to climb above freezing for the first time in a while. The good news is that areas where ice remain, that ice should be allowed to melt off and not refreeze, as temperatures will remain above freezing for the foreseeable future.

Temperatures Across Central Alabama
At 12:15 PM, we are above freezing across all of Central Alabama! Temperatures are ranging from the lower to mid 40s in the northern parts of the area, to the mid and upper 40s for most in the southern parts of the area. The warm spot is currently Eufaula at 50 degrees. The cool spots are currently Cullman and Demopolis at 42 degrees.

Birmingham’s Climatology And Records
The normal high for January 9th is 52, while the normal low is 32. The record high for today was set back in 1949 at 77 degrees. The record low was set back in 1970 at 5 degrees.

Weather For The Remainder Of The Day
Sunny skies and quite warmer compared to the past few days. Any ice that remains across Central Alabama should be able to melt away. Afternoon highs will range from the mid 40s to just above 50 degrees across the area. It will be a mostly clear evening across Central Alabama, with the exception of a few low clouds moving in over the northwestern part of the area. Overnight lows will range from near 30 degrees to the upper 30s, with the warmer temperatures located under the cloud cover in the northwest.

Tuesday’s Forecast
Another warmer day in store for Central Alabama, but clouds will be on the increase, and a very small chance of a few showers may pop up in the northwestern and extreme northern parts of the area. Highs will be in the mid 50s to the low 60s across the area. During the evening and overnight hours, skies will be cloudy and rain chances will begin to creep southward. If any rain does fall, amounts will be small (less than 0.10 inches), and will occur north of a line from Reform to Fultondale to Piedmont. South of that should remain dry. Lows will be in the low to mid 50s.

A pretty nice week ahead on the beaches of Fort Morgan all the way over to Panama City Beach. Partly to mostly sunny skies expected throughout the week, with highs starting off in the upper 50s on Monday, and climbing into the 70s for the remainder of the week. National High & Low Temperature
The warmest high temperature for the United States on Sunday was 82 degrees, recorded at San Pasqual Valley in California. The coldest low temperature for the United States on Sunday night into early this morning was -29 degrees, recorded 1 mile north-northeast of Masardis in Maine.

On This Day In Weather History: 1973
A severe ice storm struck Atlanta GA. The storm paralyzed the city closing schools and businesses, and damage from the storm was estimated at 25 million dollars. One to four inches of ice coated northern Georgia leaving 300,000 persons without electricity for up to a week. Between 7 PM and 9 PM on the 7th, 2.27 inches (liquid content) of freezing rain, sleet and snow coated Atlanta, as the temperature hovered at 32 degrees (7th-8th).
