HISTORY MAKING IN MAINE
-50 at Big Black River. This is an updated report. If it holds, it will be the coldest ever in the state of Maine breaking the long-standing previous record of -48 at Van Buren on January 19, 1925. A few other Maine lows this morning:
-48 Ninemile Bridge
-47 Allagash
-45 Dickey

Thanks to Rob Lightbrown in Caribou for sending us this very interesting information.

If I remember correctly from my 300 years working for the USWB/NWS, when a new state record happens, the min thermometer will be sent to their special lab to test for accuracy at very low temperatueres.

* The Birmingham Airport dropped one degree to 12 at 7am and it is possible that this may still not be the final low. The official stations only report highs and lows each 6 hours. But that 12 should be very close.

Still working on a long list of morning lows that will cover a wide geographic area. My fingers are already 1 millimeter shorter than when I got up at 4:45. I am suffering from chronic keyboarditis.
