STILL CHILLY: Temperatures today are colder than forecast, but at least we have broken into the 40s… barely. Birmingham reached 40 degrees at 2:00… with a low dewpoint of 12. No doubt we need to revise temperature forecasts tonight downward; I get the idea the range will be from 18 to 23 for most places, so really it will be almost as cold as last night assuming the wind stays light.

TURNING WARMER: Guidance is still suggesting mid to upper 50s tomorrow, and mid 60s on Friday. Tomorrow will feature a bright sunny sky, but some clouds will begin to return Friday as moisture moves into the state from the south.

OUR WEEKEND: A surface front slips in here Saturday, and we will continue to mention a few periods of light rain during the day with a high in the low to mid 50s. The front will stall somewhere south of Birmingham Saturday night, so looks like clouds will linger, and I think we have to mention at least some risk of scattered light rain Sunday, although the most widespread rain should remain south of I-20. Sunday will be cooler with a high around 50 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: I guess we better maintain some risk of scattered light rain Monday as the old front moves northward as a warm front, but Tuesday and Wednesday look dry and mild with highs in the low to mid 60s as the bulk of the rain falls north of the front over Tennessee and Arkansas. Still some good sign of a significant rain event Thursday or Friday of next week (January 29-30). The 12Z GFS hints at some risk of strong storms ahead of the front, with a possible change to snow on the back side of the system. Still too early to be specific.
