Friday Midday Nowcast: Sunny and Cold Day

| January 5, 2018 @ 11:17 am

We are seeing plenty of sunshine across North/Central Alabama today, but there are some clouds across South Alabama, no precipitation associated with those and the entire state will be remaining dry the rest of today.

After the frigid start to the day, with teens and some single digits for North/Central Alabama, temperatures late this morning are climbing towards the freezing mark with 20s in North Alabama, lower 30s in Central Alabama, and upper 30s down south.

For the rest of this afternoon, we should all be above freezing as afternoon highs in the upper 30s and lower 40s are expected, however, these remain 10-20 degrees below average for this time of year. Heading into tonight, expect a mainly clear sky which will allow temperatures to fall fast overnight. Temperatures will mainly be in the upper teens and lower 20s for North/Central Alabama, so another hard freeze, but at the writing of this forecast, there is not an official hard freeze warning in effect for tonight, but still continue those precautions we have all been taking the past several nights.

WEEKEND WEATHER: Tomorrow will be a sunny and warmer day with highs in the 40s for us all by the afternoon. Saturday night will be another mainly clear and cold night as lows fall into the lower 20s for most locations, and a few of those colder spots likely hitting the teens one last time for a while. On Sunday, the winds of change begin to blow as moisture levels increase and the sky becomes mostly cloudy. It will be warmer day, but still chilly with highs in the upper 40s for most of us. There could certainly be a few showers Sunday afternoon over West Alabama, but most of the rain will arrive Sunday night and through the day Monday.

WORLD TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation outside the U.S. was 117.3F at Vioolsdrif, South Africa. The lowest observation was -81.4F at Delyankir, Russia.

CONTIGUOUS TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: The highest observation was 82F at San Pasqual Vaslley, CA. The lowest observation was -42F at Embarrass, MN.

WEATHER ON THIS DATE IN 1982: A three day rainstorm in the San Francisco area finally came to an end. Marin County and Cruz County were drenched with up to 25 inches of rain, and the Sierra Nevada Range was buried under four to eight feet of snow. The storm claimed at least 36 lives, and caused more than 300 million dollars damage.
