Warmer Days Ahead

| January 20, 2018 @ 12:25 pm

Certainly warmer weather will greet you outside this afternoon across Alabama. Temperatures in most locations are well into the mid and upper 50s this afternoon with even some 60s showing up as well, which is not too far from where we should be this time of year.

We are seeing more sun than clouds, and of course we are staying dry. Heading into tonight, we will continue to see a few passing clouds, and lows tonight should range from the upper 30s to lower 40s.

FOR TOMORROW: We are forecasting more sun than clouds again tomorrow and temperatures will be much warmer. Model output below shows by the afternoon tomorrow, mid 60s should cover much of Alabama, while some locations in South Alabama will reach in 70s…I hope I don’t catch spring fever…

ACROSS THE USA: Widespread precipitation, including heavy snow, will push farther east on Saturday east across the central and southern Rockies. Snow will extend from the Rockies into the central High Plains by late Saturday, spreading farther east on Sunday, with moderate to heavy snows and gusty winds expected across portions of South Dakota and Minnesota by the end of the weekend.

RAIN/STORMS MONDAY: Monday an upper trough approaches the Mississippi River and this will cause our clouds to increase Sunday night, and rain returns to the state Monday thanks to a cold front trailing a deep surface low over the Great Lakes. Ahead of the cold front, CAPE values will reach near 1000 j/kg over Southwest Alabama, and we note that the SPC has introduced a “marginal risk” for severe weather area covering the southwest section of Alabama.

Damaging wind is likely to be the primary severe weather threat with any storms in these areas Monday and early Tuesday. At this time, for North/Central Alabama, some storms are possible, but the severe weather threat will remain to the south. Rainfall totals will be around 1/2 inch, with some locations possibility receiving close to an inch in some of the heavier storms.
