Calmer Weather Ahead

**No afternoon Weather Xtreme video today due to ongoing weather issues**

HANG ON TO YOUR HAT: The big story today has been the gradient wind across Alabama; winds on the ridge tops have gusted to well over 50 mph at times. Wind gusts have reached the 50 to 55 mph range on tip of the Daniel Building in downtown Birmingham, and at Cheaha State Park (elevation 2,407 feet). Winds have been responsible for scattered tree and power line damage, but no major structural damage has been reported, and there has been very little thunder and lightning.

Like we discussed this morning, your typical low instability, high shear event we often get early in the severe weather season. We can be thankful that updrafts remained rather disorganized and we did not have any problems with tornadoes.

THE ALABAMA DRYLINE: The “West Texas Dryline” is well known to meteorologists; that line often sets up that is the boundary between dry desert air over West Texas (dewpoints can be lower than 10 F), and moist air to the east (dewpoints of over 50 F). Today we have the Alabama Dryline; at 2:00 the dewpoint at Tuscaloosa has dropped to 38, while to the east, the Anniston dewpoint is 60. The dry air takes over tonight, and we will enjoy a bright sunny day tomorrow with a high in the mid to upper 60s.

MORE QUICK CHANGES: Clouds return on Friday, and periods of rain are likely Friday afternoon into Friday night with the next impulse moving through the strong southern stream. That rain should end during the pre-dawn hours Saturday, and the weekend still looks dry, with a high in the low 60s on Saturday, followed by upper 50s on Sunday.

We will get back to the regular “two a day” Weather Xtreme video schedule tomorrow…
