Breezy And Cold Out There At Midday

| February 2, 2018 @ 12:23 pm

As we have reached midday in Central Alabama for this 2018 edition of Groundhog’s Day, skies are mainly clear across the northern and southern parts of the area, but a stream of high thin clouds are moving over the central parts, filtering some of the sunshine from reaching the surface. It is still a little breezy out there at times, with winds averaging around 10-15 MPH out of the north.

Temperatures are really being held back today as well, with 30s in the northern parts, to the 40s and lower 50s in the south. Birmingham was at 37 degrees at 11:45 AM, with Cullman as the cold spot at 30 degrees. It’s much warmer in the southern parts with Eufaula reporting in as the warm spot at 51 degrees (if you can call that warm).

For the rest of the daylight hours and into early evening, we can expect mostly sunny skies across the area with breezy and very cool conditions. Afternoon highs will range from the lower 40s in the north to the lower 50s in the south. For later this evening and through the overnight hours, clouds will begin to build back into the area by midnight, and most of Central Alabama will have mostly cloudy skies by the time we reach sunrise on Saturday morning. The southern parts of the area will have partly cloudy to mostly clear skies. Overnight lows will dip down into the lower 20s to the lower 30s from north to south.

SATURDAY WILL BE A GRAY DAY WITH INCREASING RAIN CHANCES

We’ll start of the day with mostly cloudy skies and those clouds will continue to build during the day, as we have another rain-making system that will begin to affect the area just after the noon hour. Showers should start to move into the southwestern portions of the area by 12PM-2PM and eventually will start to spread into the rest of the area before dark. Those rain chances will be around 20-30% to start but will get much higher throughout the evening and overnight hours as the coverage and intensity of the rainfall increases. The heaviest rainfall will move into the area well after midnight and will last until after the noon hour on Sunday.
Saturday’s highs will be in the 50s with overnight lows in the upper 30s to the mid-40s. Rainfall amounts through 12AM Sunday will be light, less than a tenth of an inch, with most of the rainfall coming on Sunday morning.

JUST A QUICK PEEK INTO NEXT WEEK
We’ll have one day to dry out on Monday before our next rain-making system moves in for Tuesday and Wednesday. At this point, it looks like we may have enough instability wind shear for a possible threat of strong to severe storms, but it will all depend on the strength of the low and if any showers out ahead of the associated cold front will lower instability values. The risk looks very low, and we have a few days to get a good look at this system.

ON THIS DAY IN WEATHER HISTORY
1952 – The only tropical storm of record to hit the U.S. in February moved out of the Gulf of Mexico and across southern Florida. It produced 60 mph winds and two to four inches of rain.
