Community and business leaders, as well as representatives from Walmart, Alabama Power and Clenera, gathered at the new 72-megawatt AL Solar A project in east Alabama on Thursday, March 15, to celebrate its successful launch and operation.

AL Solar A, one of Alabama’s largest solar facilities, is owned by Houston-based Centaurus Renewable Energy. Most of the Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) the facility generates will serve Walmart through a long-term contract to help the retailer meet its renewable energy goals. Alabama Power is marketing the remaining energy and renewable energy attributes to other customers and third parties interested in supporting new renewable generation.

“Sourcing renewable energy from the AL Solar A project plays a crucially important role in providing power for Walmart facilities throughout Alabama,” said Steve Chriss, director of Energy and Strategy Analysis for Walmart. “The energy procured from AL Solar A will significantly contribute to Walmart’s sustainability goals and serve as a benchmark for our ongoing renewable energy efforts.”State and community leaders were onsite to celebrate the project, including Alabama Department of Commerce Secretary Greg Canfield, Chambers County Commissioner Charlie Williams, LaFayette Mayor Barry Moody and Chambers County Development Authority President Bobby Williams.
