| April 6, 2018 @ 11:07 pm

By Bill Murray/Scott Martin

Cold is the weather word again as another cold airmass overspreads the area.

Saturday is going to be a miserable across North and Central Alabama in the wake of a very powerful cold front. It will be mostly cloudy, windy and cold. Add in a strong north wind, and some occasional drizzle or light rain, and you have the makes of a miserable day. Especially given that there are lots of outdoor activities, baseball games, A-Day games at UAB and Auburn, etc.

Dewpoints at 10 a.m. showing the cold front.

The cold front will reach the Northwest Corner of Alabama around 2 a.m. and Tuscaloosa – Birmingham – Gadsden around 8-9 a.m. It will reach Montgomery around 2-3 p.m.

Temperatures will fall into the 40s during the morning behind the front and into the 30s during the afternoon as far south as Jasper and Cullman.

Readings over the entire area will fall into the 30s during the evening.

Winds will pick up to 10-20 mph out of north, with gusts to 25-35 mph. Afternoon wind chills will be in the 20s with readings near freezing in the I-20 Corridor and 30s to the south.

Lows early Sunday morning from the official NWS forecast

By Sunday morning, readings will range from 27-30F across North Alabama, with readings between 30-33F across North Central Alabama.

Wind chills will be in the 20s across the entire areas by Sunday morning.

A freeze watch is in effect for parts of Central Alabama for Saturday night and Sunday morning. Growers should prepare for these cold temperatures before late Saturday evening. Sensitive plants will be killed or damaged.

Winds will diminish slowly overnight Saturday, but may stay up enough south of I-20 to keep a damaging freeze from happening south of the freeze watch area. Readings south of Shelby County will be between 33-36F.

The freeze watch will be replaced with a freeze warning for Saturday night/Sunday morning over parts of the area early tomorrow.

FOOTBALL FORECAST

UAB will have their spring scrimmage game tomorrow at Legion Field starting at 1:00 PM. A few sprinkles or scattered light showers will be possible and temperatures will have already started their downward trend in the upper 40s to near 50 degrees. Winds throughout the game will be quite breezy out of the north at 10-15 MPH with a few stronger gusts. By the final whistle, temperatures will be in the mid-40s and we still may have a few sprinkles or light showers around at that time.

Auburn will have their A-Day game tomorrow at Jordan-Hare starting at 3:00 PM. Temperatures will be starting off in the lower 60s with a few sprinkles or light showers possible, and those temperatures will drop throughout the afternoon. By the end of the scrimmage, temperatures will be down in the mid-50s with the continued risk of a few sprinkles or scattered light showers.. Winds will be quite breezy at times out of the north averaging around 10-15 MPH with a few stronger gusts possible.
