Still Hot/Dry Today; Rain Chances Return Tomorrow

EYES ON THE GULF OF MEXICO: While today will be another hot, dry day for the northern half of Alabama with a high in the low 90s, a disturbance in the eastern Gulf of Mexico will bring a risk of scattered showers and storms to the southern third of the state this afternoon.

That system in the Gulf will drift to the north/northwest in coming days, and will push a deep layer of tropical moisture over all of Alabama tomorrow with showers possible statewide. This begins a multiple day with rain chances and lower heat levels.

While the hurricane season doesn’t technically start until June 1, the National Hurricane Center gives the Gulf of Mexico system a 40 percent chance of becoming a tropical or sub-tropical storm within the next five days…

One way or another, the impact will be the same… wet and unsettled weather for a decent part of the Southeast U.S. for the next five to seven days.

TOMORROW THROUGH FRIDAY: The Gulf system will keep very moist air over Alabama, and each day the sky will be occasionally cloudy with a good chance of showers, and possibly a thunderstorm. Understand the rain won’t be continuous, and the sun will be out at times, but just be ready for rain, especially during the afternoon and evening hours when the air is most unstable. We don’t expect any severe thunderstorms, and heat levels will drop with highs mostly in the low 80s.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Not much change. Deep moisture remains, and we will have occasional showers, and possibly a thunderstorm or two Saturday and Sunday. The sky will feature more clouds than sun, and highs will be in the low to mid 80s, right at seasonal averages for mid to late May.

Rain amounts across Alabama through the next seven days will range from near 3 inches close to the Georgia border, to near 1/2″ along the Mississippi border.

NEXT WEEK: Showers should thin out next week as the upper ridge rebuilds across the Deep South, but we will maintain the risk of “widely scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and storms” for much of the week. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

The sky will be cloudy at times, and there will be some risk of rain on a daily basis through the event at Greystone. So, take the rain gear, but on the positive side we don’t expect severe storms, there will be some nice breaks in the rain, and the sun should pop out at times. Daily highs will be in the 80-84 degree range.

HANGOUT MUSIC FESTIVAL: Another big event on the Alabama Gulf Coast this weekend at Gulf Shores… the weather will be somewhat unsettled with cloudy periods and the risk of a few passing showers or storms. But again, the rain won’t be continuous and there will be some sun. Highs in the 80s.
