It’s Feeling “Hot Hot Hot” At Midday, But Rain Is On Its Way

| May 14, 2018 @ 12:14 pm

Conditions At 12:10 PM

It is a hot midday across Central Alabama at this point, with very little help from the cumulus clouds that are floating overhead. But we can see signs of our rainmaking system, as clouds are starting to creep into the southeastern portions of the state. We are dry across the area at this point, with temperatures running in the mid-80s to the lower 90s from north to south.

Just Seems To Early For A Tropical Update, But We Have One

As of 9:35 AM EDT, a broad surface low with showers and thunderstorms is interacting with an upper level low over the Gulf of Mexico. There is a chance that this system could start showing tropical or subtropical characteristics during the next few days as it slowly moves northward across the Gulf of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center gives this system a 40% chance of tropical cyclone formation within the next 5 days.

No matter if it becomes a tropical system or not, this will bring a good amount of rainfall along the Gulf Coast and inland. This is the latest GFS total rainfall
estimates through the end of the day on Friday, and we’ll have some places in Central Alabama with well over 1.00″ of rain, while parts of Southern Florida could see well over 5.00″. If this system becomes a tropical storm, it will garner the name of Alberto.

Projections from the Colorado State University’s tropical team were released back in early April, stating that we could see a slightly higher than average season. They are projecting 14 named storms, with 7 of those becoming hurricanes, and 3 of those becoming major hurricanes.

Weather For The Rest Of Your Monday

As the system in the Gulf of Mexico slowly continues to move toward the Gulf Coast of Alabama and Northwest Florida, more clouds will continue to invade from the southeast and we could even see a few scattered thunderstorms in the southeastern parts of the area. Afternoon highs will be in the lower to mid-90s. Clouds will continue to be on the increase tonight and throughout the overnight hours, and a few scattered showers or thunderstorms are possible over the eastern half of the area. Overnight lows will be in the mid to upper 60s.

Wet At Times On Tuesday

The entire Central Alabama area gets in on the rain chances tomorrow, as the Gulf low moves even closer to the Gulf Coast. While much of the area will have a decent chance of showers and storms, the best chances will be in the southeastern parts of the area (east of I-65 and south of I-85). Afternoon highs will be in the 80s mainly south of the I-20 and I-59/20 corridors, and in the lower 90s north of that. Don’t expect those rain chances to leave anytime soon as skies will be cloudy with a decent chance of showers and storms throughout the evening and overnight hours. Lows dip down into the mid to upper 60s.
