Warm & Humid With Storms Around At Midday; Alberto Meanders In The Caribbean

| May 25, 2018 @ 1:54 pm

Weather Check At 1:50 PM

Looking at the latest visible satellite image, you can easily tell where the mass of showers and thunderstorms have formed so far across Central Alabama. We’ll continue to see more of these convective clouds bubbling up throughout the afternoon across the area.

Radar shows that the showers and thunderstorm activity is mainly contained to areas south of I-20 and east of I-65 at this point with a few isolated showers popping up in the northwestern parts of the area. Several flood advisories are in effect through later this afternoon for parts of Elmore, Montgomery, Autauga, Chilton, and Bullock counties for the heavy rainfall they have received and continue to receive as these storms barely have any movement at all.

Weather For The Remainder Of Your Friday
More scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue to develop, becoming numerous by later in the afternoon and into the early evening hours. Some will briefly become strong with gusty winds and the possibility of some small hail. Rainfall with some of these storms will be heavy, and with the very slow movement, some brief flooding issues could occur in areas that do not drain well. Afternoon highs will be in the mid to the upper 80s throughout the area. Those showers and storms will eventually begin to fade as we lose the heating of the day after sunset, but a few could linger well into the late night and overnight hours. Overnight lows will be in the mid-60s to the lower 70s.

Alberto Meandering Over The Northwestern Caribbean Sea

Subtropical Storm Alberto will continue on a slow northward progression through the Gulf of Mexico through Monday, bringing the potential of flash flooding along the Gulf Coast from Mississippi to Florida starting on Sunday. There is a high risk of rip currents along the Gulf Coast throughout the weekend and into the first part of next week.

At this point, Alberto has maximum sustained winds of 40 MPH and a minimum central pressure of 1005 mb, or 29.68 in. Movement is stationary at this point, but a northward movement is expected to start this afternoon and will be just off the Gulf Coast by Monday morning as a mid to strong tropical storm. As the system approaches the coast, we’ll have to watch for the threat of a few spin-up tornadoes along and east of the center of circulation. We’ll keep you posted throughout the weekend.
