Round two of our extended weather event is now underway across Alabama.

Just before 11 p.m., rain and some thunderstorms were increasing in intensity and coverage over West Central Alabama. The main rain area extends from Vernon to Jasper to Birmingham to Columbiana to Selma to Butler. This activity is moving northeast and is along an advancing warm front. To the west, showers and storms were over North Central Mississippi along the same warm front.

Another batch of moderate to occasionally heavy rain is over Northeast Alabama over parts of Cherokee, Calhoun and Cleburne Counties.

From Greenwood MS to west of Natchez, an intense line of storms is pushing eastward ahead of a surface trough and low.

A tornado warning is in effect for areas just west of Vicksburg. New severe thunderstorms warnings were just issued by the National Weather Service Jackson for western counties in Mississippi.

This line will have the potential to produce widespread wind damage across Mississippi. The line is moving quickly east at 30-35 mph.

In addition to that, we can’t rule out an isolated severe weather event over Central Alabama along that retreating warm front or south of the front as the main line moves our way later. There could even be an isolated tornado.

The storms are more intense the further south you go in Mississippi, as instability levels are higher.

The line is about 110 mile east of Pickens County, so it may reach western sections of the state between 230-330 a.m

As the main line enters West Alabama and moves east, damaging winds will be a possibility starting around 230 in the west, 4 a.m. around Birmingham, and 5 a.m. in the east. Ahead of the

Tornado warnings are in effect for two parishes in Southwest Louisiana. I have seen any reports of tornado damage so far tonight. There have been a few wind damage reports out of eastern Texas and Louisiana this afternoon and this evening.

The tornado watch will likely be extended into Alabama eventually tonight.

Just have a weatheradio turned to alert mode so it will wake you overnight in case warnings are issued. Remember, it’s always a good idea to program at one county to your west in addition to your county. And be ready to move to safe shelter on a moment’s notice if a severe thunderstorm heads your way.
