A Quick Update Just After 1:00 PM
A funnel cloud has been reported with the tornado warned storm up in Madison County, very close to Meridianville. This storm is moving to the northeast at 40 MPH. The good news is that the storm appears to be weakening some and the rotation is staying aloft, but a cell merger is about to occur so we have to watch for a sudden uptick in strength.
There are more storms over the northwestern quarter of the state but the good news is that these are below severe limits. Heavy rainfall, some gusty winds, and dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning is occurring. These are moving generally to the east around 35-40 MPH.
Forecast still looks on track from my 11:00 AM update… Timing for strong to severe storms throughout the are will be from now until 10:00 PM tonight. The main threats will be from damaging straight line thunderstorm winds of up to 60 MPH, very heavy rainfall, and dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning. There is also much smaller threat of a couple of isolated tornadoes.
Additional storms are expected to develop stating early in the afternoon as the atmosphere continues to destabilize. There will be enough helicity that some rotating storms are possible, so a brief tornado or two cannot be ruled out. Damaging winds will continue to be the main threat throughout the day and into the evening.
We’ll keep you posted throughout the day with updates. Remember that if any warnings or advisories are issued, they will be posted to the blog immediately after the NWS issues them. Check back often, and follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
