Severe Thunderstorm Watch Canceled for North Alabama

| June 23, 2018 @ 12:50 pm

UPDATE 12:50 PM
The watch has been canceled for all North Alabama counties. The storms have moved into North Georgia and Southeast Tennessee, where the watch continues.

We continue to monitor for the development of more storms this afternoon and tonight across Central Alabama. The 3km NAM shows two more rounds of storms. One late this afternoon and one this evening. We will be watching.

The Storm Prediction Center and National Weather Service in Huntsville have issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the eastern two-thirds of the Tennessee Valley that goes until 3 p.m. CDT.

Counties included are:

DeKalb, Jackson, Limestone, Madison, Marshall, and Morgan in Alabama

Franklin, Lincoln, and Moore in Tennessee

Storms moving across the Tennessee Valley are part of an MCV (mesoscale convective vortex) that is moving quickly eastward. CAPE values are running 1,000-1,500 joules/kg over Northeast Alabama and there is good bulk shear to maintain the storms. Damaging winds are the main threat.
