A Quick Check On Our Weather… Storms Moving Through The Area

| July 16, 2018 @ 10:34 am

As we approach 10:30 AM in North and Central Alabama, we have a mass of showers with embedded thunderstorms stretching from the Tennessee state line down to exiting the southern parts of Central Alabama in Marengo County. The heaviest storms are starting to push into the Birmingham metropolitan area from the northwest, and back into the northwestern parts of Walker County.

Very heavy rainfall can be expected, along with dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning. Some issues with flooding has already been reported, and an Areal Flood Advisory has already been issued for Jefferson, Bibb, and Tuscaloosa counties. Since this advisory area has already seen a great deal of heavy rainfall over the past 24-hours, and radar estimates are already showing nearly 1.50 inches of rain has fallen within the last hour, that is the reason why the advisory was issued.

All of the activity is moving slowly to the southeast, the heavier cells on the southern leading edge of the larger mass of rain in the northern half is pushing more to the south.

The latest HRRR shows that the current activity will diminish by the early afternoon hours, with more scattered activity becoming the main focus for the mid-afternoon through the remainder of the daylight hours.

One good bit of news to report… with the morning rainfall, NWS Birmingham has cancelled the heat advisory that was in effect today for Bibb, Dallas, Greene, Hale, Marengo, Perry, Pickens, Sumter, and Tuscaloosa counties.
