Showers & Storms Firing Up Along Cold Front In The North

| July 17, 2018 @ 12:54 pm

HOW’S THE WEATHER AT 12:50 PM

We have mostly clear to partly cloudy skies across much of Central Alabama at this point on your Tuesday afternoon, but we can see where a cold front has moved into the northern parts of North Alabama. Several showers and thunderstorms have formed just ahead of that front, mainly from just west of Bridgeport (Jackson Co.) to the southwest through Huntsville and ending just south of Decatur. These are slowly pushing to the southeast. A few more scattered showers have just popped up in the western parts of North Alabama, just a few miles west of Littleville and Russellville. One more shower has popped up in between Lineville and Wedowee, and is the only shower at this point in Central Alabama.

Temperatures at this time are in the lower 80s in the northern parts of Central Alabama, to the upper 80s to just at 90 degrees in the south. Cloud cover is keeping a few locations in the upper 70s along with keeping Birmingham a little cooler at 84 degrees. The hot spot is Eufaula at 90 degrees with plenty of sunshine. Both Bessemer and Alabaster are tied as the cool spots at 79 degrees.

WEATHER FOR THE REST OF YOUR TUESDAY

Showers and thunderstorms have been slow to form, and the latest run of the HRRR model (2:00 PM – midnight shown) is showing the much of the area will actually be drier than what we saw across the area on Monday. Much of the activity will continue firing up over the northern parts of the area and will slowly move its way down southward throughout the rest of the afternoon and evening. These will be associated with a cold front that will be pushing its way through the northern parts of the area today. A few scattered showers and storms are possible elsewhere in the area, but chances seem to be a little less. Afternoon highs will be in the upper 80s to the lower 90s across the area. Some showers and storms may linger around through the evening and into the late night hours, but all activity should diminish completely by the overnight hours. Lows will be down in the lower to mid-70s.

LOOK BEFORE YOU LOCK
Never leave children, disabled or elderly adults, or pets in parked vehicles. Studies have shown that the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rapidly rise to a dangerous level for children, pets and even adults. Leaving the windows slightly open does not significantly decrease the heating rate. The effects can be more severe on children because their bodies have not developed the ability to efficiently regulate internal temperature. Heat related deaths are preventable, so look before you lock.

SECOND DAY IN A ROW FOR A WATERSPOUT JUST OFFSHORE AT FORT MORGAN

I love seeing pictures from the beach, especially nice sunsets, sunrises, or clear waters. One thing that aggravates me is seeing pictures of waterspouts at the beach. Now it is no fault of the people who takes these outstanding pictures, such as the Tweet that was sent to James Spann earlier today by Christopher Owens. It frustrates me because I have vacationed at the beach one week every year since I was born and have never seen an actual waterspout in person. They either occur in bunches right before I head down I-65 to the coast, or right after I fight the traffic jams on the way back home. One year, hopefully I will be the one supplying the outstanding shot of an incredible waterspout. Maybe 2019 will be the year??? Great job on the picture, Christopher. Keep sending them in.

ON THIS DAY IN WEATHER HISTORY
1987 – Slow moving thunderstorms caused flooding on the Guadalupe River in Texas resulting in tragic loss of life. A bus and van leaving a summer youth camp stalled near the rapidly rising river, just west of the town of Comfort, and a powerful surge of water swept away 43 persons, mostly teenagers. Ten drowned in the floodwaters. Most of the others were rescued from tree tops by helicopter.
