Strong to Severe Storms Over South Alabama; Slightly Lower Dew Points Moving into North and Central Alabama Behind Front

| July 22, 2018 @ 12:43 pm

Our cold front lies across the middle of Alabama early on this July Sunday afternoon.

Thunderstorms started firing over West Central Alabama around 10 a.m. ahead of the cold front. They intensified rapidly and prompted a severe thunderstorm warning for Marengo County. Other severe thunderstorm warnings are being issued over SOuth Alabama.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for several counties in South Alabama, including Baldwin, Butler, Clarke, Coffee, Conecuh, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Escambia, Geneva, Henry, Houston, Mobile, Monroe, Washington, and Wilcox counties until 7 p.m. CDT.

To the north of the front, mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies prevail, with a freshening northwesterly wind and lower dewpoints being shipped in. Mind you, it’s still humid, just not the oppressive humidity of the past few days.

A huge upper level low is centered over Central Ohio, near Columbus. This upper low will affect Alabama’s weather for the next several days, producing clouds and occasional light showers. The best rain chances will come on Tuesday and Wednesday. Rainfall amounts over the week will be light, however around a quarter to one-half inch, with the higher amounts over eastern Alabama.

Temperatures will be a little below normal this week, thanks to the upper level low and its accompanying showers and clouds. Highs will generally be in the middle and upper 80s through midweek.

Rain chances will decrease by Thursday as the low weakens. Temperatures will warm back into the lower 90s for the weekend.

Our next god rain chances will come late in the weekend as a cold front approaches from the northeast.
