Hot, With A Few Storms In The South: It’s Your Midday Nowcast For Central Alabama

| August 16, 2018 @ 1:06 pm

A CHECK ON OUR WEATHER SITUATION AS OF 12:45 PM: Much of Central Alabama is bathed in plenty of sunshine, but there are several storms showing up mainly in the southern parts of the state, including the southern portions of the area. There are a few showers and storms over in Mississippi that may eventually drift over into the western parts of the area in a little while, but we’re mostly quiet at this point. Temperatures are already up into the mid-80s to the lower 90s, with the warm spots being Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, and Montgomery at 91 degrees.

WEATHER FOR THE REST OF YOUR THURSDAY: We’ll continue to have mostly clear to partly cloudy skies through the rest of your afternoon and into the early evening hours, with a very slight chance of a few isolated to scattered showers and storms. There will be a little higher coverage of storms in the southeastern parts of the area. While we may have a couple of storms that may become strong in Central Alabama, there is a Marginal Risk for severe storms over the northwestern corner of the state with isolated damaging wind gusts as the main threat. Afternoon highs will be in the upper 80s to the mid-90s. For later this evening and into the late night and overnight hours, any storms out there are expected to diminish, but one or two could linger around through midnight. Overnight lows will be in the lower to mid-70s.

LOOK BEFORE YOU LOCK: Never leave children, disabled or elderly adults, or pets in parked vehicles. Studies have shown that the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rapidly rise to a dangerous level for children, pets, and even adults. Leaving the windows slightly open does not significantly decrease the heating rate. The effects can be more severe on children because their bodies have not developed the ability to efficiently regulate internal temperature. Heat-related deaths are preventable, so look before you lock.

A LOOK AT THE TROPICS: Subtropical Storm Ernesto is moving into colder waters of the North Atlantic and farther away from any land. Maximum sustained winds are at 45 MPH, and movement is to the northeast at 16 MPH. There is another disturbance located around 700 miles east-southeast of the Windward Islands. It only has a small chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 5 days as it heads to the west-northwest, around 20%. It will move into an unfavorable airmass for development on Saturday, limiting its chances of strengthening.

ON THIS DAY IN WEATHER HISTORY: 1777 – The Battle of Bennington, delayed a day by rain, was fought. The rain-delayed British reinforcements, and allowed the Vermont Militia to arrive in time, enabling the Americans to win a victory by defeating two enemy forces, one at a time.
