Bibb, Chilton and Coosa Counties Added to Freeze Warning

| November 10, 2018 @ 9:23 pm

The NWS in Birmingham has extended the area under the freeze warning to include Bibb, Chilton and Coosa Counties.

A freeze warning now covers all of North and central Alabama north of and including the following counties: Pickens, Tuscaloosa, Bibb, Chilton, Coosa, Clay, and Randolph.

This, of course, includes Hamilton, Cullman, Jasper, Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Talladega, Gadsden and Anniston.

You will notice that Lauderdale and Lawrence Counties are not included. That is because this morning’s widespread freeze effectively ended their growing season. The National Weather Service only issues frost and freeze alerts until the growing season is over.

Temperatures are already near freezing across much of the area, with dewpoints in the upper 20s. Lows will drop another couple of degrees through the overnight hours, creating a widespread freeze in the warning area.

Widespread frost is expected to occur in the frost advisory area, with lows ranging between 33F-36F. Official temperatures are measured at 2 meters, or about 6 feet above the ground. Temperatures at the surface will drop a few degrees below the official temp though, as light winds and mostly clear skies allowing for excellent radiational cooling.

There is a fly in the ointment however as some clouds are lifting east-northeastward across southern Mississippi and into southwestern Alabama. This may help keep temperatures a little warmer in areas that see cloudiness overnight.

There are a few light showers moving across southeastern Mississippi and Southwest Alabama. At most though a few sprinkles or a little sleet are falling in those areas however, as I could find no surface reports of precipitation.
