A Few Scattered Showers For Now, Heavier Stuff Comes Later Today

| December 27, 2018 @ 9:54 am

As of 9:05 am, we have some light to moderate showers falling mainly over the western parts of North and Central Alabama with a few more over the southeastern and northeastern parts as well. All of this activity is moving off to the northeast close to 40 MPH. There is one cell moving out of northeastern Pickens County and into southwestern Fayette County that is producing a few claps of thunder. There are no worries at this point as any stronger storms will occur later this evening and into the overnight hours.

Looking back to our west, we see that there is a lull in the action between what we are seeing in our neck of the woods to the main line of heavier rain and thunderstorms. The main line is in the process of crossing the Mississippi River as it is moving through the eastern half of Arkansas and the west and central parts of Louisiana. There are currently two Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and a Tornado Warning in effect for several locations in the northeastern corner of Louisiana. A Tornado Watch is also in effect for much of the western half of Louisiana and back into southeastern parts of Texas until 11:00 am today.

The SPC continues a Marginal Risk of severe storms for this evening into the overnight hours for the southwestern and western parts of Central Alabama, especially for locations west of a line from Millport to Coker to Marion. The line of storms should be in a weakening phase when it moves into the area later tonight as the dynamics will be lifting quickly to the north farter away from Central Alabama. There may be enough shear for a few isolated damaging wind gusts and a very, very low risk of a brief tornado.

The main window for the heavier rain and storms look to be from 4:00 pm this afternoon through 2:00 pm on Friday, with the main window for stronger to marginally severe storms from 10:00 pm tonight through 4:00 am Friday morning.

A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through 6:00 pm Friday evening for nearly all of Central Alabama, while a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 12:00 am Friday morning. Rainfall totals through 12:00 am Saturday morning could reach as high as 2.00 to 3.50 inches across Central Alabama. Winds will be breezy throughout the day out of the southeast at 20-25 MPH with gust up to 35 MPH possible at times. Enough to blow your outdoor furniture and empty garbage cans and containers around, along with downing some tree limbs and even some smaller trees with the saturated ground.

We are having high loads on the blog today, so we’ll be operating in “high-traffic mode” throughout today and tomorrow. We’ll keep you posted throughout the day. Remember, warnings are automatically posted to the blog when they are issued from the NWS offices in Birmingham and Huntsville.
