SPC Mesoscale Discussion: Tornado Watch 3…

| January 19, 2019 @ 5:38 pm

SUMMARY…Damaging wind gusts and a tornado or two will remain possible throughout Tornado Watch 3 for at least the next few hours. Expansion in area may be needed into more of central GA and the eastern FL Panhandle.

DISCUSSION…Well developed convective line continues to move eastward at 40-45 kt. Northern portion of the line (currently near CSG) has shown an increase in forward speed during the past hour or so, signaling the development of stronger outflow and a relatively higher threat for damaging wind gusts. Transient embedded rotation has also been noted as a result of the this outflow surge. A few cells ahead of the line have also shown some supercellular characteristics, although the shallow and transient nature of these updrafts has limited tornado development over the past hour. Overall, these trends (i.e. outflow surges within the line and shallow supercells ahead of it) are expected to persist for at least the next hour or two and may extend outside of the current watch area, particularly across central GA and the western FL Panhandle.
