Mainly Dry Afternoon, Wet Times Ahead

| February 16, 2019 @ 11:54 am

Clouds continue to linger across much of the area this afternoon as the front drifts down into the southern counties of the state. We are seeing some areas of sun, and as we head through the afternoon, we are expecting to see some peeks of sunshine across North/Central Alabama.

It will remain dry the rest of today as the showers have shifted south with the front. Temperatures this afternoon are in the 50s over North Alabama, with 60s and 70s to the south.

For tonight, the front begins to moves northward as a warm front, and rain chances will begin to increase again. Temperatures will range from the upper 40s to the north to upper 50s to the south.

RAIN RETURNS: Our Sunday will feature a mostly cloudy sky with numerous to widespread showers through out much of the day. There is a chance of a thunderstorm during the afternoon hours, mainly to the south, but these will not be severe. High temperatures will be noticeably warmer with mid 60s across North/Central Alabama with upper 70s down south.

WET TIMES AHEAD: Monday looks generally dry with just a few widely scattered showers, highs will be around 60. Tuesday through Friday are going to be wet as we are looking at a multiple day, excessive rain event. The combination of a stalled surface boundary and very high precipitable water values will bring heavy rain at times to the northern half of Alabama on these four days. Rain amounts of 4 to 8 inches are possible, with isolated heavier totals not out of the question.

If you live in a flood prone area, understand this is a significant threat and make preparations now. Also, the rain will bring the risk of longer term river flooding.

There is so good news, though a few thunderstorms are possible at times through the week, for now the threat of severe storms looks rather low. And, still no signs of any excessively cold air for Alabama for the next 7 to 10 days as highs much of the week ahead will be in the 60s across the area.
