Marginal Risk Expanded To Cover Most Of North/Central Alabama

| March 24, 2019 @ 10:23 pm

The Storm Prediction Center has expanded the Marginal Risk for severe storms on Monday to now include nearly all of Central Alabama and a large chunk of North Alabama. Locations south of a line from Sulligent to Phil Campbell to Huntsville to Hytop have been defined in the Marginal Risk. North of that line, general thunderstorms are expected on Monday.

Threats continue to be from large hail and damaging winds up to 60 MPH. The good news is that tornadoes will not be a threat with this system, but as always with thunderstorms in the Spring Severe Weather Season in Alabama, expect the unexpected.

At this point, timing looks to be from 1:00 pm through 9:00 pm moving from northwest to southeast through the threat areas. While strong to marginally severe storms are possible throughout the risk area, the higher probability for the stronger storms will be along and south of the I-59 corridor.

Go ahead and have your severe weather kits ready along with your plan of action just in case a warning is issued for your location. Also remember, severe thunderstorm wind gusts can be as strong as a lower end tornado, so treat it as one. People have been injured and killed from damaging winds associated with a severe thunderstorm.

Sorry about not having an update out earlier as planned… traffic slowed me down coming home from Starkville. The Southeastern Severe Storms Symposium was incredible and would suggest that you make plans to attend next year’s event at Mississippi State University.

I’ll have updates throughout the day on the blog and on our social media feeds.
