Radar Update at 11 p.m.: Storms Approaching Alabama Border; Moving Faster than Expected

| April 13, 2019 @ 11:02 pm

Our line of storms is within one tier of counties of moving into Alabama here late tonight.

The storms passing near West Point, or northwest of Columbus still has radar indications of a tornado with it. It produced a tornado earlier near Starkville. The NWS in Memphis does not plan to continue the tornado warning, however, as the circulation appears to be weakening.

This storm will move toward Vernon and Sulligent in Lamar County. We want our friends in Lamar County to be ready to go through their tornado plan.

A tornadic storm is approaching Meridian right now. There have been reports of power lines down in Meridian. This storm will move toward Sumter County. It will affect areas from Ward to York to Livingston to Emelle and eventually Boligee. We want our friends in Sumter County to be beginning their tornado plans now.

The storms seem to be becoming more energized, just as we feared, as the low-level jet increases and the cold front surges eastward.

The timing has changed somewhat as the system is moving faster than earlier. It will begin impacting the westernmost counties between 11 p.m. and midnight. It will impact areas from Haleyville to Carbon Hill and Tuscaloosa as early as 1 a.m. It could reach Birmingham and Selma between 2-3 a.m. It could reach Gadsden and Anniston between 3-4 a.m.

Damaging winds and the possibility of a few tornadoes are the main threat. The tornadoes could be strong, with the powerful wind shear present. There is also the threat of flash flooding for the next few hours with the areas of heavier rain.

The cold front is now passing Greenwood, Mississippi. The severe threat will end for everyone when the cold frontal storms push through your area.

Skies will clear to some degree Sunday morning, but more clouds will move back into during the morning to late morning hour as the trough swings through.

There could be a few showers later on Sunday as the main trough swings through.
