Tornado Threat Extending Farther North Into The Northern Half Of Central Alabama

| April 18, 2019 @ 4:58 pm

Strong storms are approaching the state line and NWS Birmingham has gone ahead and issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for all of Sumter County until 5:30 pm. A few tornado warnings continue for a few counties in the eastern parts of Mississippi that we’ll need to watch as they approach the state.

NWS Birmingham has now mentioned that the threat of tornadoes is increasing across the southern 2/3rds of Central Alabama, with that higher threat now reaching as far north as Reform to Birmingham to Anniston. So, locally, they have all locations along and south of that line in an Enhanced Risk for severe storms throughout the event with tornadoes and damaging winds up to 70 MPH possible. A Slight Risk is up for all locations north of that line with damaging winds up to 60 MPH and a few tornadoes possible.

Timing has been adjusted as the system appears to be moving just a little slower in the latest model runs. The western third of the area (west of a line from Demopolis to West Jefferson to Holly Pond) will occur from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm west to east, the central third of the area (east to a line from Fort Deposit to Alexander City to Ranburne) from 7:00 pm to 1:00 am, and the eastern third of the area from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am.

Be sure your friends, neighbors, and family members know about the threat of severe storms. Now is the time to be ready to act if your location goes under a warning. If you wait until a warning is issued, it may be too late. Stay weather aware. We’ll continue to have updates.
