Already Very Warm For Most Across Central Alabama At Midday

| May 17, 2019 @ 12:28 pm

First of all, apologies to our Twitter followers and to the early morning blog readers that saw older posts containing several warnings from previous storm systems. We had a server issue and when it was fixed, it released some archived warnings and advisories by accident. Everything should be back to normal on the blog.

At 12:10 pm, radar is free of any shower or thunderstorm activity, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more isolated shower and thunderstorm development later this afternoon and into the early evening hours. We already have some puffy cumulus clouds forming with the daytime heating. The atmosphere is already unstable as CAPE values are already up into the 2,000-3,000 J/kg range. We are still a little too cool for thunderstorms to develop, but wherever temperatures get warmer than 87 degrees, I believe thunderstorms will start to develop mainly over the eastern 2/3rds of the area. Current temperatures are in the upper 70s to the upper 80s for most, but Tuscaloosa is already at 90 degrees. Birmingham was at 84 degrees while the cool spot was Auburn at 79 degrees.

For the rest of the daylight hours on your Friday, we’ll have mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies with a chance of isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms mainly east of a line from Jasper to Tuscaloosa to Demopolis. Highs will be in the upper 80s to the lower 90s. For tonight, shower chances will diminish for nearly all of the area, but a few showers and storms may remain for a little while over the southeastern parts of the area. Lows will be in the mid to upper 60s.

Saturday will be a hot day as we’ll have mostly sunny skies. Afternoon highs will reach the upper 80s to the lower 90s across the area. No rain is expected and moisture levels will be a little lower. Skies will be clear Saturday night with lows in the lower to mid-60s.
