Popcorn Showers on a Sunday Afternoon

| June 9, 2019 @ 1:26 pm

Clouds are breaking up across Central Alabama on this June Sunday, allowing for increasing sunshine. Additional showers and storms are popping up like popcorn in the warm, moist and moderately unstable airmass across the state under a weak upper-level low-pressure system. They will be generally scattered across the area like yesterday. Precipitable water values are high like yesterday, so if you get a heavy shower, be alert for brief heavy rain and lightning.

SHOWERS TO THIN OUT: Coverage for today’s activity is less than that of yesterday, and that trend will continue into Monday. The trough will lift out to the northeast and a stronger surface low will develop over the Great Lakes, dragging a front through Alabama Monday afternoon and evening. This will trigger and put an end to showers and storms across the area from northwest to southeast late tomorrow. The biggest benefit will be that lows by Tuesday morning will be in the upper 50s to lower 60s across the area. Hooray! Tuesday will be dry and mild with lower humidity and a nice northerly breeze.

WEDNESDAY SECOND FRONT: Another trough will dig down into the Mid-South on Wednesday, powering another front that will come through Alabama. This front will trigger another round of scattered showers and storms, but moisture will be limited, and so will coverage. This front will usher in even cooler and drier air, giving us some fine June weather by Thursday morning. Look for widespread lows in the 50s with only the urban heat islands like Birmingham and Tuscaloosa hanging onto 60s by morning. Thursday and Friday should be beautiful days, with warm highs in the lower and middle 80s, relatively low humidity, partly cloudy skies, and no rain.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Some difference in the models for next weekend, with the GFS returning rainfall to the area. The European looks like it makes more sense, keeping us dry, so we will go with that forecast for now.
