Storms Weakening, But Threat Of Strong To Severe Storms Continue At 1:00 AM

| June 20, 2019 @ 12:58 am

1:00 am: The bowing line of storms associated with an MCS is moving through the eastern and northeastern parts of Mississippi and will be entering the western parts of North/Central Alabama not too long from now. We still have several severe thunderstorm warnings in effect along and just ahead of the line.

Radar trends over the past several minutes have shown signs of weakening as lightning has decreased along with intensity in rainfall. This may be due to lower instability rates over eastern Mississippi, where CAPE values are only in the 1000-1500 J/kg range. It also looks like it is becoming cold-pool dominant with an outflow boundary surging ahead of it.

At this point, NWS Birmingham is planning on issuing Significant Weather Advisories for the line of storms as it starts to push into the area. We could see wind gusts of 40-50 MPH along the line. They will watch for any concentrated areas of higher gusts for possible warnings.

We’ll have to watch closely as conditions are a little more conducive over the western half of North/Central Alabama. CAPE values are nearing 2500 J/kg in parts of the area, and with 925mb-850mb winds at 20-25 knots, which could lead to a replenishing of strength.

All of the activity is moving eastward at around 60 MPH and should be moving into the western parts of North/Central Alabama within the next 60-90 minutes.

A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH continues until 6:00 am Thursday morning for a good chunk of North/Central Alabama.
