Strong To Severe Storms Out There At Midday

| August 8, 2019 @ 12:53 pm

At 12:50 pm, we have a few stronger storms out there across portions of Central Alabama, especially a severe thunderstorm over parts of Lee, Macon, and Tallapoosa counties. Maxwell radar showed potential winds of 58 MPH just a few minutes ago, but those wind a dropped a little since. The warned cell is moving to the southeast at 20 MPH and will be affecting Tuskegee, Notasulga, Franklin, Liberty City, I 85 Rest Area, Uphapee Creek, and Moton Field Municipal Airport shortly.

NWS Birmingham has removed Fayette, Lamar, Marion, Walker, and Winston counties from the Heat Advisory as clouds and precipitation are keeping temperatures a little cooler at this point. NWS Huntsville has also removed Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, and Lawrence counties from the advisory for the same reasons. The Heat Advisory continues until 9:00 pm tonight for Autauga, Barbour, Bibb, Bullock, Chilton, Dallas, Elmore, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Montgomery, Perry, Pickens, Pike, Russell, Shelby, Sumter, Tuscaloosa counties.

We’ll have another impulse move into Central Alabama during the afternoon hours, and with the higher instability values and dry air aloft, we have the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms mainly along and west of the I-65 corridor through 9:00 pm tonight. While the Storm Prediction Center does not have a severe storm risk up for anyone in Alabama, NWS Birmingham has a Marginal Risk for severe storms up for locations along and west of the I-65 corridor. Damaging winds up to 60 MPH will be possible. The activity should dissipate rapidly after sunset and should be mainly dry by midnight.

We’ll have a chance of scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms throughout the remainder of the afternoon and evening hours, some of which could become strong to severe with the potential of damaging winds up to 60 MPH. Afternoon highs will range from the lower to the upper 90s across the area with heat indices reaching or exceeding 105 degrees in the Heat Advisory area. For tonight, some showers and storms will continue through the evening and into the late-night hours, with nearly everything dying off before midnight. Some of these storms could be strong to severe up to 9:00 pm. Lows will get into the lower to mid-70s. We’ll also have to watch for a possible MCS developing to the northwest of the state and moving into the area during the pre-dawn and into the early morning hours on Friday.

The Storm Prediction Center just released an update to the Day 2 Severe Weather Outlook and nearly all of North/Central Alabama has been included in a Marginal Risk of severe storms for Friday. Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will be possible once again, with the potential of a few of those becoming severe with damaging winds up to 60 MPH. It will also be another hot and humid day with highs reaching the upper 80s to the mid-90s across the area.
