| September 29, 2019 @ 10:44 am

Hurricane Lorenzo briefly achieved category five status last night after a period of rapid intensification. The hurricane has top winds of 145 mph this morning and is located about 1,350 miles southwest of the Azores Islands and over 2,600 miles southwest of Ireland.

The category four hurricane is moving north northeast at 10 mph and is expected to accelerate to the northeast starting Monday night.

It will still be a hurricane by the time it passes the Azores Tuesday night and early Wednesday. It will become an extratropical system on Wednesday, and still be a powerful storm with strong tropical-storm-force winds by the time it is close to Ireland on Thursday or Friday.
