A Quick Check At 9:00 PM, Some Delays Posted In North Alabama

| November 11, 2019 @ 9:04 pm

The cold front continues to slowly move into the northwestern portions of the state as we approach the 9:00 pm hour in North and Central Alabama. While Birmingham was at 62 degrees, it has already dropped to 50 degrees in Muscle Shoals, and down to 33 degrees over in Memphis, Tennessee.

We continue to have decent coverage of showers across much of the northern half of the state with some scattered activity over the southern portions. As you could see with the first image, we still have temperatures well over the freezing mark and it may take to around 2:00-3:00 am to drop down to the levels to where we could see a change over to a wintry mix (snow flurries and sleet pellets).

As the front approaches and passes your location, winds will start to pick up in sustained speed out of the north. A Wind Advisory is in effect for all of Central Alabama starting tonight at 11:00 pm tonight and will go through 5:00 pm on Tuesday evening. Sustained winds of 10-20 MPH out of the north can be expected and gusts up to 30-35 MPH are possible at times.

We still do not believe there will be any major travel issues, but I can’t rule out a few slick spots on elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses, especially in the extreme northern parts of North Alabama. Once you get to the I-59 corridor and move south of it, the wintry mix will be much less likely. The timing for any changeover could occur from 3:00 am to 9:00 am before temperatures make it above freezing for much of the area.
