Sunny, Cool New Year’s Eve

THE FINAL HOURS OF 2019: The year is ending on a calm and clear note across Alabama. We are once again seeing sunshine in full supply today as a very dry air mass sits in place across the state.

Temperatures at midday are in the 40s for most spots and as we head through the afternoon hours should reach the lower to mid 50s across North/Central Alabama.

RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR: Heading out and about tonight, there will be no weather issues this year with dry and chilly conditions expected as the calendar turns to 2020. It will be clear night with with temperatures ranging from the upper 30s to lower 40s around the midnight hour.

NEW YEAR’S DAY: By first thing tomorrow morning, we should be flirting with the freezing mark in many locations. For the first day of the new year, we should continue to see more sun than clouds, but clouds will be on the increase by late in the day; expect highs in the mid 50s.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: For tomorrow’s Outback Bowl in Tampa (Auburn vs Minnesota; 12p CT kickoff)… the sky will be sunny with temperatures rising from the mid 60s at kickoff, into the upper 60s by the second half.

Very similar weather for the Citrus Bowl in Orlando tomorrow (Alabama vs Michigan; 12p CT kickoff)… a clear sky with temperatures in the mid to upper 60s.

For the Birmingham Bowl Thursday (Cincinnati vs Boston College; 2p CT kickoff), the sky will be cloudy with rain likely throughout the game. Not expecting any thunder and lightning, and there is no severe weather risk. Temperatures will hover in the 54-58 degree range.

CONTIGUOUS TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation was 87F at Big Cypress Reservation, FL. The lowest observation was -37F at Peter Sinks, UT.

WEATHER ON THIS DATE IN 1929: Greenland Ranch, in Death Valley, California, went the entire year without measurable precipitation.
