A Quick Look at Alabama’s Weather, and the Latest on the Tropics

| May 31, 2020 @ 11:26 am

A gorgeous last day of May is in progress across Alabama. High pressure centered near Chicago is ridging down into Lousiana and keeping us in a dry northerly flow.

Temperatures are climbing toward or into the 80s. At 11 a.m., it is 80F at Birmingham, 82F at Tuscaloosa, and 78F at Anniston. Highs will top out near 80F over the Tennessee Valley, with lower and middle 80s over North Central and Central Alabama. Some South Central Alabama locations may reach the upper 80s.

Dewpoints are in the middle and upper 50s. Upstream, dewpoints in the 40s are flowing toward us and by morning, low 50s dewpoints will be common across North and Central Alabama. Overnight lows will be in the 50s north of I-20, and between 60-65F to the south.

Winds are out of the NNE at 10-15 mph and will remain a little brisk through tonight.

Monday will be partly cloudy with a small chance of a shower, but it’s a very small chance. Highs will be in the upper 80s mostly.

Tuesday and Wednesday should be dry and hot with highs near 90F. Scattered afternoon and evening storms will return Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and high pressure loosens its hold. We will be watching the Gulf for the possibility of tropical development.

Probability of tropical storm force winds from the ECMWF ensemble run a t0z last evening

A tropical storm moved into Central America this morning from the eastern Pacific. This system may migrate into the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, and aided by an upward pulse in the Madden Julian Oscillation, may become a named system in the Gulf. The Euro ensembles even have some chance of a hurricane. They seem to favor a track toward the western Louisiana coast. Not a forecast at this time, but a possibility. We will be watching.
