Mostly Dry Today/Tomorrow; Showers Return Sunday

| September 25, 2020 @ 5:37 am

DRIER TODAY: Clouds continue to blanket Alabama early this morning, but the big rain mass associated with the remnant circulation of former Tropical Storm Beta has moved out of the state. Clouds will linger this morning along with patchy drizzle, but some sun could break through the clouds this afternoon as drier air creeps into the state… the high today will be in the 74-78 degree range. The average high for Birmingham on September 25 is 82.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Tomorrow will be warm and dry; with a partly to mostly sunny sky we expect a high in the mid 80s. Then, on Sunday, expect a mix of sun and clouds, and will we will bring in a chance of scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Chance of any one spot getting wet Sunday is 30/40 percent, and the high will be in the 82-85 degree range.

NEXT WEEK: A cold front will approach Monday, and showers will be possible statewide. Not an “all day” rain, but occasional showers are a good possibility with highs around 80. The southern 2/3 of the state will be dry and cooler Tuesday, but we will mention a chance of some patchy light rain over the northern counties as a deep upper trough swings through. The rest of the week will feature sunny pleasant days and clear cool nights with highs mostly in the 70s and lows in the 50s. Cooler spots will see 40s during the early morning hours toward the end of the week… See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

LONGER RANGE: The latest outlook from CPC (the Climate Prediction Center) suggests temperatures could be well below average across Alabama and the Deep South October 2-9. We could see our first light frost of the season for parts of North Alabama at some point during that time frame if the forest verifies.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Auburn will host Kentucky at Jordan Hare Stadium tomorrow (11a CT kickoff)… expect a partly to mostly sunny sky… temperatures will rise into the low 80s during the game. And, Alabama travels to Columbia, Missouri to take on Mizzou tomorrow night (6p CT kickoff); the sky will be clear with temperatures falling from near 82 at kickoff, through the 70s during the second half.

For the high school games tonight, expect mostly fair and pleasant weather. Temperatures will fall slowly into the upper 60s.

TROPICS: All remains quiet across the Atlantic basin; tropical storm formation is not expected through early next week. Hurricane season runs through the end of November.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: Four hurricanes were spinning simultaneously in the Atlantic basin: Georges, Ivan, Jeanne, and Karl. That was the first time this had happened since 1893. Georges would make its seventh and final landfall near Biloxi, Mississippi on September 28, 1998.
