Noon Update: Perfect Today, Perfect Tomorrow, Nice Week Ahead, But Gulf Coast May Deal with a Hurricane Late in the Week

| October 4, 2020 @ 12:14 pm

It is a beautiful, hazy autumn afternoon across North and Central Alabama. A few high thin clouds are spreading up from the south and have reached as far north at Shelby County. They are actually the exhaust from Tropical Storm Gamma over the southern Gulf of Mexico.

A few clouds are beginning to form in the convergence ahead of an approaching cold front that has passed Memphis, Greenville, Mississippi, and Ruston, Louisiana. The front is moisture starved, and we won’t observe much of a change when it passes except for a few gusty winds in its wake. The front should reach I-59 by 5-6 p.m. this afternoon.

Temperatures are warming into and through the 70s now, heading for highs between 74-76F across the Tennessee Valley and 76-80F over Central Alabama.

Dew points are in the upper 40s and lower 50s.

Lows tonight will drop to between 47-49F in North Alabama dn 50-54F across Central Alabama.

Monday will feature weather perfection with mostly sunny skies and light northerly winds. Highs tomorrow will be a degree or two cooler than today, running about 75-78F across Central Alabama, with readings between 71-73F over the Tennessee Valley.

We are seeing increasing signs that the Central Gulf Coast may deal with a hurricane late in the week. It is too early to be specific about details concerning impacts since the system has not even formed yet. It is still a disturbance in the Central Caribbean, but it expected to become a tropical depression later today or Monday as it moves toward the Gulf of Mexico. It should be over the Gulf by Tuesday. We will know a lot more as the system develops.
