Make Your Alabama Garden Grow This Fall

Fall is prime time for planting trees.

Indeed, cooler temperatures benefit the growth of trees, shrubs and perennial flowers, said Bethany O’Rear, a regional extension agent for nine years with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.

“When the temperatures start falling, that’s the time to plant trees and shrubs so they put on a show the following summer,” said O’Rear, who works from the Beaty Hanna Horticulture and Environmental Center at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. “Plants aren’t heat-stressed during the fall and can put their energy into root growth, gearing up for next spring’s new leaves. Remember to keep newly planted trees and shrubs watered so they can get a healthy start.”
