Warming Trend Ahead; Dry Through The Weekend

| November 3, 2020 @ 3:15 pm

BLUE SKY: Nothing but sunshine across Alabama this afternoon; temperatures are mostly in the mid to upper 60s. Tonight will be clear and not as cold as last night; lows will be mostly in the 34-40 degree range.

The weather will stay dry through Friday with mostly sunny days, fair nights, and a warming trend. Look for a high in the low 70s tomorrow and Thursday, followed by mid 70s Friday.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Moisture levels will rise a bit, but for now we don’t expect any rain over the weekend. Partly sunny Saturday and Sunday with highs in the mid 70s, about 5 degrees above average for early November in Alabama. Lows will be in the low 60s.

NEXT WEEK: There is considerable uncertainty in the forecast next week with lots of questions about Eta, but we will mention some risk of showers by Tuesday and Wednesday with increasing moisture. Highs through the week will be in the 70s. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

TROPICS: Hurricane Eta, with winds of 140 mph, has been meandering just offshore of the coast of Nicaragua this morning. It will move inland over the next several hours with a weakening trend.

It is still not certain if the surface circulation will survive its trek over Central America during the next several days, but the official forecast continues to show the remnants of Eta emerging over the northwestern Caribbean Sea late this week. If it survives, Eta could move into the Southeast Gulf of Mexico this weekend, but it is simply too early to call. We will be watching.

The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet; the hurricane season ends November 30.

ON THIS DATE IN 1966: An early season snowfall, which started on the 2nd, whitened the ground from Alabama to Michigan. Mobile had their earliest snowflakes on record; to the north Huntsville picked up 4 inches of snow. Just three days later, temperatures rebounded back into the 60s, and Alabama spent a work week in the 70s following the snow.
