Late Morning Update: Wet and Windy, Some Strong Storms Possible

| November 25, 2020 @ 10:40 am

A cold front is approaching Alabama today and will continue to bring the threat for rain and storms into Alabama the rest of today. Out ahead of the front, we are seeing clouds and very breezy conditions today with winds of 15-30 mph. That is pumping in an unstable air mass into the state and that could allow for some stronger storms later today.

The SPC maintains the low end “marginal risk” (level 1/5) for severe storms across a large swath of Alabama the rest of today and through tonight. But the threat has decreased across Northwest Alabama.

Through the morning hours, areas of moderate to heavy rain have been working across portions of the state and these appear to be stabilizing the atmosphere in locations they have already moved through and they continue to move east into the Birmingham Metro as of 11AM.

As we head through the afternoon hours, and the air becomes more unstable, showers and heavier thunderstorms could develop ahead of this initial area of rain and some of the high-resolution models show this later this afternoon and evening.

While this is not a major threat, it does look like there will be a sufficient combination of shear and surface based instability for a few strong to severe thunderstorms with the front as it moves across the state. The main window for these storms will come from Now-10PM.

Again, this is not major threat but there is enough of concern that you will need to remain weather aware for the rest of today and tonight as stronger thunderstorms will be capable of producing small hail and strong gusty winds. Also, a brief, isolated tornado or two can’t be ruled out, especially over the western half of the state. As far as rainfall, we should see totals around 1/2 inch are likely for most places, with isolated totals to one inch. Flooding is not expected.

THANKSGIVING DAY: The cold front will stall across South/Central Alabama tomorrow and that will divide sunny, drier air from clouds and rain. For North/Central Alabama tomorrow, should feature a mix of sun and clouds with highs in the 60s. South of the front, especially for areas south of Clanton, tomorrow looks cloudy with scattered showers, but nothing too heavy or widespread, with temperatures in the 70s.
