Midday Turkey Day Nowcast: Some Sun, Some Clouds

| November 26, 2020 @ 11:13 am

Drier air has settled into the state behind the front that moved through the state overnight. That front is now stalled across South Alabama where clouds and some showers/storms remain in the forecast, while north of the front, most of us are dealing with tons of sunshine on this Thanksgiving Day, and I am certainly thankful for that.

Temperatures late this morning, are ranging from the 50s to the 70s across the state, and this afternoon they should be in the lower 60s in the northwest to mid and upper 70s to the southeast. For tonight, temperatures fall into the 40s, with some clouds and scattered showers across the southern half to the state.

BLACK FRIDAY: A wave of low pressure will develop along the front to the west tomorrow causing clouds to increase, and lead to rain overspreading the state by tomorrow afternoon. The most widespread and heavy rain, with perhaps some rumbles of thunder will come across the southern two-thirds of the state; we do not expect any severe storms across North or Central Alabama. Highs tomorrow will be on either side of 70 degrees.

HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFFS: Rain is possible tomorrow night for the high school playoff games across the state; the most widespread and heaviest rain will be over the southern counties of the state. Temperatures will be in the 60s.

IRON BOWL FORECAST: Saturday looks like a great day for the biggest football game of the year in Alabama (Auburn at Alabama; 2:30p CT kickoff at Bryant-Denny Stadium). The sky will be partly to mostly sunny; temperatures will fall from 65 degrees at kickoff, to near 60 by the final whistle. No risk of rain.

IN THE TROPICS: A frontal low pressure system is located several hundred miles southeast of Bermuda. The low is forecast to interact with an upper-level trough today and could acquire some subtropical characteristics during the next day or two while it drifts south-southwestward. Environmental conditions are expected to become unfavorable for further development by the weekend. Formation chance through 5 days…low…20 percent.

A non-tropical area of low pressure is expected to form over the far eastern Atlantic during the weekend. This system could gradually gain subtropical characteristics while it moves slowly southward through early next week. Formation chance through 5 days…low…20 percent.
