Another Cold Night Ahead For Alabama
**No afternoon Weather Xtreme video today; we are on a holiday schedule**
ANOTHER VERY COLD NIGHT: So far the high in Birmingham today is 37 degrees; this is only the 12th time the city has experienced a high below 40 degrees on December 25 since 1900. The sky will stay clear tonight, and we project lows ranging from 15 to 25 degrees early tomorrow morning.
The weekend will be dry with a warming trend; with a good supply of sunshine the high tomorrow will be close to 50 degrees, followed by upper 50s Sunday.
NEXT WEEK: Clouds return Monday, and a few sprinkles are possible with a cold front drifting into the state, but moisture will be very limited, and significant rain looks unlikely. Tuesday will be dry with a high in the 58-60 degree range. Then, a potent weather system will bring rain and a few thunderstorms to the state Wednesday, Wednesday night, into early Thursday. It looks very similar to the weather system we experienced earlier this week; instability values look too low for any big severe weather problems, and rain amounts of 1-2 inches are likely. Then, colder air rolls in Thursday with some risk of snow flurries on the back side of the departing system. Friday will be cool and dry.
ON THIS DATE IN 2010: A surface low in the Northern Gulf of Mexico along with an upper level disturbance moving southeastward from the Great Plains contributed to an observation of heavy snowfall on Christmas Day, 2010. The snowfall blanketed much of Northern and Central Alabama; amounts of 1 to 3 inches were common over the northern half of the state. However, only a trace of snow was recorded at the Birmingham International Airport with no snow to measure on the snowboard. The city of Birmingham has therefore still never recorded a white Christmas since records have been kept, which is over 100 years.
ON THIS DATE IN 2015: An EF-2 tornado moved through parts of Midfield, and the far southwest part of the city of Birmingham on Christmas Day 2015… destroying three homes and a church with winds between 111-135 mph. Three people were trapped in those structures, and one was taken to a hospital for treatment.
