Dry Today; Rain Returns Tomorrow/Friday

| January 20, 2021 @ 5:39 am

DRY WEATHER FOR ALABAMA TODAY: A weak surface front is drifting into the far southern part of Alabama today, and a surge of drier and slightly cooler air is dropping southward. For most of the state we expect a decent amount of sun today with a high in the 50s for the northern half of the state… South Alabama will see 60s again this afternoon. Clouds will increase tonight as a wave forms on the front to the west.

TOMORROW/FRIDAY: The weather turns wet statewide. We expect periods of rain tomorrow and Friday with a cloudy sky; rain amounts of at least one inch are likely with isolated heavier amounts. No risk of severe storms, and probably no thunder. Highs will be in the 50s.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: We will squeeze in a day day Saturday… with a partly sunny sky we expect a high in the mid 50s again. Clouds return Sunday, and while a decent part of the day will be dry, a few afternoon showers are likely over the northern and western counties. The high Sunday will be close to 60 degrees.

MONDAY: Rain and a few thunderstorms are likely across the state Monday. The European global depicts a deep surface low in far western Kentucky, with a warm, moist, unstable airmass across Alabama and some potential for strong, maybe even severe thunderstorms. But the American GFS suggests just rain with some thunder; we will get much better resolution on how this unfolds later this week.

REST OF NEXT WEEK: The rest of the week looks generally dry; an upper trough could squeeze out a few sprinkles Tuesday night or early Wednesday, however. Highs will be mostly in the 50s with lows in the 30s, right at seasonal averages for late January. Still no sign of any winter weather issues or bitterly cold air through early February.

ON THIS DATE IN 1937: The wettest Inaugural Day of record with 1.77 inches of rain in 24 hours. Temperatures were only in the 30s as Franklin D. Roosevelt was sworn in for his second term.
