Periods Of Rain Likely Tomorrow and Friday

| January 20, 2021 @ 2:58 pm

NICE DAY: We have filtered sunshine across the northern half of Alabama today thanks to a layer of high, thin cirrus clouds; temperatures are in the 48-55 degree range. South Alabama is warmer with low to mid 60s. Clouds will increase tonight statewide.

TOMORROW/FRIDAY: Moisture moves into Alabama from the south, and with a stalled front nearby we expect periods of rain tomorrow and Friday. No risk of severe storms, probably no thunder. Rain amounts of around one inch are likely, a few isolated heaver amounts are possible. The high tomorrow will be close to 60, followed by mid 50s Friday.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Saturday will be a dry day… with a partly sunny sky we expect a high in the mid 50s. Then, clouds increase Sunday ahead of a cold front. A few showers are possible Sunday afternoon, mainly over the northern and western counties of the state. The high Sunday will be close to 60 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: Rain and a few thunderstorms are likely Monday. Confidence is high in a rain event, but details remain unclear with considerable model differences. The European global model continues to show a strong surface low northwest of our state with an unstable airmass in place, suggesting a chance of strong, maybe even severe thunderstorms. But, the American GFS continues to suggest rain with some thunder, but no severe weather worries. We will have better clarity in coming days.

A disturbance could bring some light rain Tuesday night, otherwise the rest of the week looks dry. The high Tuesday will be in the low 60s, then falling back into the 50s over the latter half of the week. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

ON THIS DATE IN 1937: The wettest Inaugural Day of record with 1.77 inches of rain in 24 hours. Temperatures were only in the 30s as Franklin D. Roosevelt was sworn in for his second term.
