Rain Returns To Alabama Thursday Night

| February 2, 2021 @ 3:02 pm

SUNNY, BUT COLD: Not a cloud in the sky across Alabama this afternoon; temperatures are in the 40s over the northern half of the state, with 50s to the south. Tonight will be clear and cold with a low in the 20s.

Tomorrow will be another sunny day with a high in the low 50s. Clouds return Thursday as temperatures rise to near 60 degrees, and rain moves into the state Thursday night ahead of a cold front. No risk of severe storms, probably no thunder… rain amounts should be 1/2 inch or less for most places. Then, the sky becomes partly to mostly sunny Friday with a high between 47 and 51 degrees.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Saturday will be a dry day; with a partly sunny sky the high will be in the mid 50s, right at seasonal averages for early February. Clouds move in Saturday night, and some rain is likely at times late Saturday night into the day Sunday. We are still seeing differences with the global models concerning timing of the rain, but at the moment it looks like the main window for rain comes from midnight Saturday night to 12 noon Sunday. Thermal values suggest the precipitation will be in the form of rain for almost all of the state, and amounts should be under 1/2 inch. Sunday’s high will be in the low 50s.

NEXT WEEK: Global models/ensembles have backed off on the amplification of the upper air pattern across North America early next week. Still, an impressive shot of cold air will drop into the U.S… but the look for now is not as cold as yesterday’s output for the Deep South. We are now expecting lows across North Alabama Monday morning in the 18-28 degree range. Cold, but not as severe as what we saw yesterday. The weather will be dry Monday, Tuesday, and during the day Wednesday.

A weather system will bring a chance of more precipitation to the state Wednesday night into Thursday; for the moment it looks like it will be mostly in the form of rain. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
